Little Rock; Arkansas; 12, September 2017: Black Oak Analytics, a growing data and analytics company, is proud to announce that data scientist Daniel Pullen has earned his Ph.D.in Integrated Computingfrom UALR this May.The company, founded in 2007, is dedicated to partnering with their clients to help them manage information and data as a corporate asset, as well as use it as a competitive differentiator.
Daniel hails from Roland, AR and has been with Black Oak since 2012. He cannot remember a time when he was not interested in computing and analytics – he started using computers at five years old. “With an exposure to technology at such a young age, it inspired me to always learn more and push the boundaries of my knowledge and understanding,” he commented.
Prior to entering the Ph.D. program, he earned an undergraduate degree from UALR in Information Science in 2012. However, a Ph.D. was not always part of his plan. Pullen went back to college after returning from an enlistment in the Air Force. Pullen said, “During my bachelor studies I met Dr. Ningning Wu. She asked me to participate in an information quality research project. During that project, I met Dr. John R. Talburt, and learned a great deal about information quality and entity resolution.”
After he finished his bachelor’s degree, Pullen began his master’s studies andjoined Black Oak. His work at Black Oak contributed to his master’s project, which ultimately grew into his doctoral research. Daniel believes that his studies and his work at Black Oak have given him the opportunity to have a unique perspective in the field, and to be at the forefront of research and industry implementation of quality focused entity resolution processes. His work has directly improved the software Black Oak develops and provides expertise in entity resolution.
“I owe a huge amount of gratitude to UALR and the professors who worked with me”, says Pullen. “Essentially, all my knowledge of entity resolution and information quality originate from my studies, research, and work opportunities from the University.” His studies enrich the daily work he does at Black Oak, including entity resolution, rule development, quality assessment, and the design and development of Black Oak Analytics’ big data entity resolution platform, HiPER.
